The Think Tank Selection Process

What is a Think Tank
A think tank is an independent research organisation engaged on a regular basis in studying a particular issue in order to develop a broad range of policy solutions, actively seeking to educate, advise or to influence relevant policy makers at both governmental and non-governmental (business) levels.
In order to be included in the Think Tank Map, a research organisation must comply with the following main criteria:

  1. It must conduct both research and dissemination activities.
  2. The final objective of its activities must be a practical solution, not the simple definition of a problem.
  3. Policy makers and experts must be its main targets. The general public must be involved only as a means to influence policy makers.
  4. Its projects and partners list must be updated and well-defined.
  5. Its activities must be focused on climate change governance.
A think tank may offer consulting, but its main focus must be its own research. We do not consider as think tanks the organizations who conduct their research only on contract.

The Think Tank Map project
The Think Tank Map is an instrument which aims to provide a complete overview of every active think tank in the field of climate change governance. This instrument will make it possible to understand where the research organisations working on climate change are based and which projects are currently under development.
The Think Tank Map is not only a showcase for every organisation working on climate change governance, but it is a also a catalyst for new cooperation opportunities, allowing stakeholders, researchers, institutions, and the media to be informed on all the relevant activities, to find new contacts, and to engage in mutually beneficial partnerships. The Think Tank Map is the starting point of a wide scope of activities.
The Think Tank Map is developed by the International Centre for Climate Governance (ICCG), a research centre which focuses its activities on the design of climate policy and on the related governing institutions. Based in Venice, Italy, ICCG was jointly established by the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei and the Giorgio Cini Foundation. ICCG is chaired by Professor Carlo Carraro, a leading figure in the field of climate change and current President of the University of Venice. Our activities involve research in climate change as well as the organisation of international events, such as conferences, policy meetings, and lectures.

Research fields: Think Tanks' areas of investigation
We outlined nine different research fields within the field of climate change governance: Impacts, Adaptation, Renewable energy & Energy efficiency, Policy & Institutions, Carbon finance, Climate & Development, Sustainable cities, Forestry & Land use, Water. Each research area includes a selection of specific fields of activity. Each research field includes a selection of specific fields of activity. To make the searches on the Map more precise, each think tank included has been linked to a maximum of five research fields.

The Think Tank Selection Process

The first selection of think tanks was made from ICCG's wide network of contacts, which was built during several years of cooperation in an international environment. The other think tanks were selected after an accurate source analysis based on the most authoritative publications and activities' reports.
To expand our database, we are open to voluntary contributions from think tanks, researchers, and everyone who uses the Map. We accept recommendations regarding new organizations that should be added, as well as any contribution aiming to update, review, and complete the data presented on the Map. For further information on how to submit the data of a Think Tank, or to suggest any alteration to the information presented on the Map, please see the F.A.Q. section.
