Scoping Meeting for the IPCC 5th Assessment Report


13thJuly 2009: ICCG welcomes the first IPCC Meeting hold in Italy with an open cerimony at Fondazione Giorgio Cini, in the suggestive atmosphere of the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice.

The Scoping Meeting for the IPCC 5th Assessment Report, organised by IPCC and hosted by CMCC, ICCG and FEEM, has taken place from the 13th to the 17th July 2009 in Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Hilton Molino Stucky.

The meeting benefits from the kind contribution of the Italian Government and is designed to identify the outline and structure of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5)

It is a great pleasure and a privilege for me to open this meeting, since this marks an extremely important phase in the history of the IPCC and the Panel's activities, and because we are embarking on our Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). It would perhaps be valid to believe that the finest hour of the IPCC came and went in 2007 and 2008, particularly with the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 and the overwhelming response that the Fourth Assessment Report received worldwide in the months following its release >> more

This is a crucial step in the process of the next Assessment Report and surely this is going to be a week of hard work for all of us. It is difficult to underestimate the challenge we have in front of us. The environmental problems we are facing today are considerably more complex than those we had 20 or 30 years ago. Environmental questions are often difficult to define and solutions are also elusive as well. Furthermore, scientific results are often at the base of political and economic decisions that in their turn can influence the environment.
